What is Cade?

Cade wood, Juniperus Oxycedrus, is a robust, thorny juniper that grows in the rocky soils of the Mediterranean garrigues. It has been used since the dawn of time by Provençal shepherds as a grandmother’s remedy, thanks to its many virtues. On a daily basis, Cade was used to treat their animals, purify the air and keep flying insects away from their sheepfolds and mas, or as an antiseptic treatment for themselves.

Cade is not a cultivable shrub, so we harvest it in the wild. We work with farmers from Languedoc to Provence, who harvest Cade wood in a rational way for a variety of clearing activities: maintaining hiking trails, reducing fire risks, planting vineyards or olive groves, and maintaining the edges of farmland.

At Ambiance Cade, we make a point of using wood in its entirety to avoid waste. The heartwood is used to make mothproofing and other products where aesthetics are important. Heartwood off-cuts and sapwood are used to manufacture Cade powder. Finally, all the offcuts are distilled to extract the essential oil and make our cosmetics.

The Cade used to make our products comes from the French garrigue.
