All about Magic Wood: Cade Juniper

Cade (Juniperus Oxycedrus) is a juniper tree of modest size, a little brother of the softwoods (fir, spruce, etc.).

Its evergreen leaves are needles with fine, prickly tips.

Bois de cade, or juniper cade, is a shrub that grows on arid, rocky soils and thrives in hot weather. It grows in the Mediterranean basin, from Languedoc to Provence and Corsica.

This tree is naturally oil-rich and highly fragrant.

It is a shrub that can reach 6 to 8 m in height, and can be recognized by its very prickly needles and round (red-brown) fruits.

The essential oil of Bois de Cade has always been extracted. Cade was burned in stone ovens built in the garrigue.
